A Guide to the Invisalign® Process Step by Step

24 September 2025 | Dr. Frédéric Lavoie

Invisalign® is an advanced orthodontic treatment designed to correct most malocclusions. Unlike traditional braces, it uses a series of clear, removable aligners that gradually move the teeth into their ideal positions.

This discreet, comfortable, and flexible option is far less restrictive than traditional orthodontic treatments. As a result, it is especially popular for correcting tooth alignment or spacing. Moreover, you can eat and drink without restriction throughout the treatment, since the aligners can be removed.

What Are the Steps?

The treatment process is straightforward, personalized and typically requires fewer appointments compared to other orthodontic treatments like traditional braces.

The Evaluation

Your Invisalign® journey begins with an evaluation by an orthodontist. During this consultation, they will assess whether your type of malocclusion can be treated using Invisalign®. They can also perform an Invisalign® smile assessment to give you an idea of the final result of your treatment.

If your orthodontist determines that you are a good candidate, they will take photographs and X-rays of your mouth. They will then make precise digital impressions of your teeth using a specialized scanner. Finally, they will send this data to Invisalign® along with the treatment plan so that production of your custom aligners can begin.

The Treatment Plan

The orthodontist will create a customized treatment plan tailored to your unique needs. This plan is sent to Invisalign®, where the aligners are custom-made according to the orthodontist’s recommendations. Each set of aligners is slightly different, designed to gradually shift your teeth, and must be worn in a precise sequence that follows the evolution of your treatment.

Wearing Invisalign® Aligners

Once the aligners are ready, you can start wearing them. Each aligner set is designed to gradually move your teeth. They must be worn in a specific sequence to ensure the effectiveness of the treatment and guide your teeth to their desired position.

You will typically replace them every one to two weeks, depending on your orthodontist’s recommendations. The aligners must be worn 22 hours a day minimum to achieve optimal results, but can be easily removed when eating and drinking.

Completing Treatment and Maintaining Results

Once your treatment is complete and your malocclusion has been corrected, you’ll need to wear a retainer at night to help maintain your teeth’s new position. This final step is essential to prevent your teeth from moving back to their original alignment. With consistent use and good hygiene, you can preserve the results for years to come. You can now appreciate the results of your improved smile, not just in appearance, but in confidence as well.
